 n\nFellow).\n\nJohnny Mack is Toquaht\, of the Nuu-chah-nulth\nTribal Coun
 cil. He was raised on an Indian Reserve in\nNuu-chah-nulth territory\, off
  the West Coast of Vancouver\nIsland.\nJohnny's doctoral research focuses 
 on interchange between\nIndigenous legal traditions and colonization. He i
 s interested in\nhow the Aboriginal rights and title framework and contemp
 orary\ntreaty negotiations in Canada carry forward the momentum of earlier
 \ncolonial policies by continuing to dispossess indigenous peoples of\nthe
 ir land base and facilitating their reintegrating into the land\nas libera
 l democratic Canadians.\nThose aspects of indigenous socio-legal and polit
 ical history\nconflicting with entrenched liberal norms related to\, for e
 xample\,\ncitizenship\, democracy and property are cut back and reinterpre
 ted\nas sui generis rights that harmonize with the colonial project in\nit
 s contemporary forms. This updated wave of colonization is more\nrobust th
 an its earlier form because it imbues the colonial project\nwith indigenou
 s agency: indigenous peoples become rights bearing\nsubjects who can and d
 o bring legal and political claims against\nthe state.\nThis talk focuses 
 on the need to develop internal practices of\nreflexivity and critique cap
 able of holding indigenous agency\naccountable to the histories that const
 itute us as indigenous\npeoples.\n
