Biography:

Dr. Kaufmann’s research program explores the role of hematopoietic stem cells and trained immunity (“innate immune memory”) in allergic diseases. Her work focuses on respiratory allergies affecting both the upper and lower airways, including allergic rhinitis and asthma. By investigating the fundamental mechanisms of allergy development, her team aims to pave the way for new preventive and therapeutic strategies. The Kaufmann Lab integrates animal models with human samples, applying advanced flow cytometry, imaging, and single-cell sequencing, alongside functional in vitro and in vivo approaches, to connect basic discovery with translational impact.

Dr. Eva Kaufmann studied Veterinary Medicine in Germany, complemented by research fellowships in South Africa and the USA. She earned her PhD in Immunology at the German Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, with a visiting scientist appointment at IPBS Toulouse, where she investigated lipopeptide-specific T cell responses in BCG vaccination. As a postdoctoral fellow at ĢƵ, she advanced research on trained immunity and hematopoietic stem cell dynamics in tuberculosis, and later explored SARS-CoV-2 vaccination strategies. In 2022, Dr. Kaufmann joined Queen’s University as an Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Immunology and Inflammation, establishing the Kaufmann Lab with its research focus on innate memory responses in allergic diseases. In 2025, Dr. Kaufmann was recruited back to ĢƵ as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, with her group based at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories of the RI-MUHC.
