 tion\n\nAbstract: Infants learn the speech-sound categories of their nativ
 e language during the first year. Demonstrations of this learning have lic
 ensed the working assumption that infants thenceforth translate spoken utt
 erances into a sequence of these categories\, and use statistical heuristi
 cs over these sequences to find words and learn other aspects of language 
 structure. I will make a case that this is assumption is wrong\, and will 
 suggest other ways to think about what is happening when infants listen to
