After the war\, the Offenbach Archival Depot was tasked with rep atriating three million looted books. Some libraries were returned to thei r caretakers in their entirety but not in those cases where libraries had been destroyed. For these books\, changing borders and governments in the post-war political climate conferred an urgency on this initiative and amo ngst those books that had been orphaned\, the Jewish Public Library receiv ed the largest donation from Offenbach in Canada through a deal brokered b y the Canadian Jewish Congress.\n\nBy contrast\, the Judaica Collections a t Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Rare Books and Special Collections—the Lewin Collection\, the J oe Fishstein Collection of Yiddish Poetry\, and the Saul Shapiro Collectio n of Anglo-American Judaica—were donated either through the families of th e original collectors or in some cases through the intervention of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’ s faculty.\n\nTo commemorate Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Holocaust Remembrance Wee k\, the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Library and the Jewish Public Library welcome all to come a nd interact with selections from both collections\, including a large map showing both points of origin and of no return.\n\nShort presentations wil l be livestreamed online for remote attendees\, and in-person attendees ar e invited to look at and explore these tangible pieces of material Jewish culture that have found their way to Montreal by routes known\, and unknow n.\n\nOpen to all\, please RSVP.\n\nWhat on YouTube\n\n\nProvenance et orp helins d'Offenbach : Une présentation de livres rares avec les textes et l es contextes des collections judaïques de Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ et de la Bibliothèque pub lique juive\n\nPour les textes juifs\, la généalogie de la propriété a fai t l'objet\, à la fois\, d'une chronique minutieuse et de caprices comme le vol de millions de livres par les nazis pendant l'Holocauste.
