ALCOHOL - KNOW YOUR LIMITS http://www.pjshealthandfitness.com/Index.asp Mon, 24 Nov 2008 15:12:12 GMT http://www.pjshealthandfitness.com/Index.asp PJ’s is linking up with the Government’s high profile Know Your Limits campaign to help raise our members’ awareness of the relationship between drinking alcohol and their health. The campaign launched in May with TV, radio and magazine adverts and has received a lot of media attention. Alcohol impacts on health in a number of ways so the campaign is highly relevant to our members. Alcoholic drinks can be high in calories (a 250ml glass of wine or a strong pint of beer can contain about the same number of calories as a sausage roll) which is important for our members trying to shed or keep weight off. Alcohol use affects exercise performance. For example, drinking too much alcohol in the 24 hours before exercising means you are more likely to develop muscle cramps. In the longer term, regularly drinking too much alcohol increases the risk of developing illnesses such as mouth, liver and breast cancer, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Many people don’t actually realise how much alcohol they are drinking. One of the campaign’s aims is to raise awareness of how many units of alcohol are contained in typical alcoholic drinks. Did you know that a large glass of wine (ABV 12 per cent) contains three units? According to a campaign survey, 77% of people didn’t. As the campaign’s tagline says: “Units. They all add up.”
