ĢƵ has mandated St-Denis Thompson to carry out Project 18-013, which involves the renovation of the parking island and surrounding area at 680 Sherbrooke West. This work will include the installation of new parking access and exit equipment, as well as the introduction of four electric vehicle (EV) chargers, which will bring EV charging infrastructure to this garage for the first time.

The new access and payment systems will provide simpler and more efficient entry and exit for both visitors and permit holders. Permit holders will benefit from the introduction of RFID tag access, for faster and more reliable entry and exit.

Visitors will also experience an improved payment process. With the upgraded system, visitors will be able to pay by simply tapping a credit or debit card at the exit.

Key Information

  • Location: 680 Sherbrooke Street West – Parking Garage
  • Construction start date: November 7, 2025
  • Planned completion: December 15, 2025
  • Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Work outside of building hours will be coordinated in advance.)
  • Project Manager: andre.labelle [at] mcgill.ca (André Labelle) – 514-567-9672
  • Assistant Project Manager: yun.zhang3 [at] mcgill.ca (Yun Zhang) – 514-817-4859

  • Contact for garage users: angela.debellis [at] mcgill.ca (Angela Debellis) – 514-398-8437

Scope of Work

  • Installation of new parking access and exit equipment.
  • Installation of four CoRe+ Level 2 EV chargers.

Impact on Users

  • Normal use of the parking lot will be maintained at all times. In the event that a full closure becomes necessary, advance notice of at least 24 hours will be provided.
  • Demolition of the current island cabin for parking payment will require a temporary enclosure, which will relocate the parking ticket operation booth.
  • Temporary storage and site office will be set up at the ‘unused parking area’ on level 1 of the garage. Temporary enclosures will be built but will not affect any movements within these areas.
  • Expect low to medium levels of noise during the work period.
  • Some work may require service shutdowns (e.g., electrical, water). Building users will be informed in advance of any planned shutdowns.
  • A truck will be parked at the entrance of the 680 Sherbrooke garage, blocking the metal door used for diesel refills. The driver will always be on site and available to move the truck if required.
  • Large transportation and deliveries may temporarily affect the garage entrance at 680 Sherbrooke and the loading dock entrance of the McCord Stewart Museum. Users of both buildings will be informed in advance.

Safety Measures

The work will be carried out in areas potentially containing lead paint and will involve the evacuation of contaminated concrete blocks in sealed demolished batches using a “small bin.”

  • All work will be performed in compliance with the appropriate lead safety protocols.
  • Safety measures include installing enclosures to isolate the work area and, if required, placing the area under negative pressure.
  • Specialized vacuuming equipment will be used as needed.
