Celebrating Dr. Catherine Fichten – Joint Psychosocial Research & Academic Rounds

Dr. Catherine Fichten was an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ and a Professor in the Psychology Department at Dawson College. She was also a clinical psychologist and a researcher with the Behavioral Psychotherapy and Research Unit at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) in Montreal.

At the JGH, she collaborated with Eva Libman and Sally Bailes on research into sleep and insomnia. Their work reflected the essence of translational research — integrating their research expertise directly into clinical care and teaching. Dr. FichtenÌýÌýwas the co-director of the Adaptech Research Network / Réseau de Recherche Adaptech, a bilingual, multidisciplinary research team focused on higher education and disability. This network studies factors that contribute to the success of college and university students with disabilities, with a focus on technologies. Notably, Catherine developed a toolkit to support students with disabilities during their clinical internships: .

Catherine engaged in international research collaborations with scholars from Israel, the UK, the US, Germany, and Belgium, and was actively involved in organizing academic conferences. She received several awards, including the Canadian Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Public or Community Service.

She published extensively in both English and French, collaborating with colleagues and students — producing 40 papers in the past four years alone, while simultaneously holding over $7 million in research grants from provincial and federal agencies.

Catherine was a brilliant researcher who made significant contributions not only to the field of psychology, but also to adaptive technologies that support the success of students with disabilities, and to the study of sleep medicine.

Her insights and passionate dedication to her students were inspiring. Her care, compassion, and commitment to creating inclusive learning environments are an example for us all. In our department, Catherine’s voice and participation were a staple in our rounds—always kind, curious, and supportive.

To celebrate her legacy, six speakers will present highlights of her work and academic contributions.
