Abstract: Infants learn the speech-sound categories of their native language during the first year. Demonstrations of this learning have licensed the working assumption that infants thenceforth translate spoken utterances into a sequence of these categories, and use statistical heuristics over these sequences to find words and learn other aspects of language structure. I will make a case that this is assumption is wrong, and will suggest other ways to think about what is happening when infants listen to speech.
