Contingency plan for the week of September 29

Dear students,

As you may have heard, earlier this week the FMOQ held a vote, with 91% of voters in favour of joining the FMSQ’s work actions, as of October 1. We hope to have more details on September 30 and will communicate the plan for the rest of next week (October 1 and on) with you at that time.

We are also aware that there have been rumours in the media about medical schools shutting down. Our priority remains to our students, and to our patients, and we are committed to continue to do all we can to deliver the curriculum within the constraints we have.

Here is some information we would like you to know for the start of the week of September 29.

This week, we have:

  • communicated with students via email and participated in a town hall with Med-3 and Med-4
  • reviewed the course elements data for period 3 and the period 4 clerkship form data
  • planned contingency measures for week 3 of the FMSQ pressure tactics and possible FMOQ pressure tactics
  • continued advocating for visiting electives and considerations for CaRMS

Next week, we will be:

  • completing the review of period 3 data (logs, EPAs, clerkship form data)
  • planning contingency measures in the case of a fourth week of pressure tactics
  • communicating with students either via email or town hall meetings
  • participating in advocacy meetings

Update on AFMC advocacy

As a result of advocacy efforts from the four Quebec medical schools in meetings  with the AFMC, the AFMC Board of Directors voted today  to temporarily suspend two rules regarding electives in an effort to mitigate disruptions to the CaRMS match for students affected by the FMSQ pressure tactics:

  • Motion 1: That the AFMC suspend the Electives Diversification policy (on an exceptional basis) for Québec students affected by the FMSQ strike and allow students to complete Family Medicine electives over and above the 8 week cap. And furthermore, that UGME offices be able to assess electives for students from the rest of Canada who are affected by the strike and decide on whether the policy needs to be suspended on a case by case basis.
  • Motion 2: That the AFMC suspend the Visiting Electives Cap of 12 weeks on an exceptional basis for students affected by the FMSQ strike in order to increase the allowed number of electives in any discipline, including Family Medicine. This will allow students to continue their education accessing any available electives.
